Sail away to Portugal this week as we cruise along the beautiful Douro River. I’ve been on a number of river cruises over the years, mostly in Europe traveling along rivers in Hungary, Austria, and France to name a few. With these experiences under my belt, I thought I knew what to expect before joining Viking River Cruises on a cruise along Portugal’s Douro River. I did not. No, due to the peculiarities of the river and the very special destination that is Portugal, a river cruise experience on the Douro is a singular event, totally unlike its cousins across the continent. This week we learn more not only about what a Douro River Cruise is really like, but what to see and do in Lisbon as well.

About the Corinthia Hotel Lisbon
Corinthia Lisbon, opened in 2004, is a 21st-century upscale hotel located 7 km from the airport and only short distance from the historic city centre, with excellent public transportation links. Created with a passion for craftsmanship and an understanding of world-class service, Corinthia Lisbon is a member of Corinthia Hotels’ collection of five-star luxury hotels founded by the Pisani family of Malta.

About Viking Cruises
Viking was founded in 1997 with the purchase of four ships in Russia. Designed for discerning travelers with interests in science, history, culture and cuisine, Chairman Torstein Hagen often says Viking offers guests “the thinking person’s cruise” in contrast to mainstream cruises. In its first four years of operation, Viking has been rated the #1 ocean cruise line in Travel + Leisure’s 2016, 2017, 2018 and 2019 “World’s Best” Awards. Viking currently operates a fleet of 79 vessels (in 2020), offering scenic cruising on rivers, oceans and lakes around the world.
