A Fun Escape to the Kingsmill Resort in Virginia

A Fun Escape to the Kingsmill Resort in Virginia

Long known for its award-winning immersive Colonial-era experiences, Williamsburg is about so much more than tricorn hats. It’s actually been that way for quite a long time, but curious visitors have finally caught on to what had been largely known only to locals. At the heart of that experience for me personally will always be the luxurious getaway, the Kingsmill Resort. Why is it so spectacular? For these reasons and so many more.

Location

Located in Virginia’s Tidewater region in the southeast part of the state, Williamsburg’s popularity throughout the years has in large part been bolstered by its convenient location. Williamsburg is less than three hours from Washington, DC and an easy 45-minute drive from Richmond. Also nearby are equally historic Jamestown and Yorktown, and down the road is Virginia Beach. So whether you are traveling from these spots or wish to add them to your vacation plans, Williamsburg serves as a terrific home base.

The Kingsmill Resort

Sitting on a portion of land that was once the Colonial-era Kingsmill Plantation, the luxurious getaway we know today came to life in the 1970s as part of a series of massive investments by Anheuser-Busch in Williamsburg. These developments included not just mixed-use sites and the resort destination of Kingsmill, but also Busch Gardens theme park which is right next door.

Among its many superlatives, Kingsmill has been long known as an incredible golf destination, which they take very seriously. The property’s three courses were designed by Curtis Strange, Arnold Palmer and Pete Dye – obvious legends of golf and course design. While the courses are indeed professional level quality, they’re also very approachable and a lot of fun for any level of golfer. Kingsmill may excel in golf and golf getaways, but that’s certainly not the only reason to love the resort.

Among the many resort amenities offered at Kingsmill are indoor/outdoor pools, a lazy river pool, tennis and pickle ball, and a full service marina; just some of the many ways guests enjoy themselves while they call Kingsmill home. One of the most popular though, and a personal favorite, is the Kingsmill Spa. Featuring views of the beautiful James River, my tension seemed to dissipate instantly as a sense of calm and peacefulness enveloped me. The public spaces are fantastic and the treatment rooms aren’t only state of the art, but incredibly relaxing as well. The spa is I think a great way to thank your muscles after a fun week of outdoor explorations.

Williamsburg

There are few spots in the country so well suited for so many different types of travelers as Williamsburg. The most obvious are family travelers, visiting with kids of any age where Colonial Williamsburg will bring history to life. Painstakingly restored, Williamsburg is the best spot in the country in which to be immersed in colonial-era life. There’s just nothing quite like the experience and strolling down the area’s main thoroughfare is something of which I will never tire. Another fun way to experience Colonial Williamsburg is to enjoy a meal at one of the colonial taverns, or restaurants. Josiah Chowning’s Tavern is a typical Williamsburg colonial eatery, offering a great atmosphere and period food. At night though, Chowning’s hosts the always fun, sometimes bawdy gambols. Gambols are games and songs from the 1700s that were popular in taverns at the time. Patrons are encouraged to participate and before long, you will find yourself singing along with the rest of the house in raucous songs and limericks. It’s a lot of fun and definitely not to be missed.

Aside from the colonial side of things, Busch Gardens is one of my favorite theme parks, offering great rides, food and just plain old fun. If you’re a foodie there’s no shortage of incredible restaurants in town as well as the Williamsburg Winery and several breweries that offer some tasty brews.

The Allure of Kingsmill

When I really enjoy a hotel or resort sometimes it’s hard to say why exactly. I can surely cite the rooms or the amenities as reasons, which they are, but it’s also so much more than that. Great vacation getaways have a certain indefinable quality that I can’t fully explain, but I know it when I feel it. Kingsmill has this travel magic and it’s a spot that I don’t only find to be fun, but relaxing and even therapeutic. So, if you’re looking for a safe, drivable getaway this summer then look no further from this truly incredible resort.
